Can Hoytey J beat the record???
Securing a world record is an extraordinary accomplishment, earning you a lasting spot in the history books. However, possessing the title for the longest nose globally might not have been a childhood aspiration. And just to clarify, it's not Pinocchio holding that record.
Interestingly, the unbeaten record to this day belongs to Thomas Wedders, a feat dating back to the 18th century.
If we were to think about individuals with prominent noses—be it a friend, a celebrity, or a cartoon character—it's doubtful that any of them could rival Wedders. Pinocchio might be a contender, but only after a string of well-told lies.
Regrettably, there are no photographic records of Wedders' impressive nose, but the anecdotal evidence suggests that he proudly displayed it throughout Yorkshire.
Quoting an excerpt from The Strand Magazine, Vol. XI, released in 1896: "Thus, if noses were ever uniformly exact in representing the importance of the individual, this gentleman should have amassed all the money in Threadneedle Street and conquered all Europe, for his prodigious nose was a blend of the acquisitive with the martial.
"However, either his chin was too weak, his brow too low, or Nature, in the process of granting him this remarkable nose, forgot to endow him with brains. Alternatively, the nose might have taken up too much space, crowding out the latter commodity.
"In any case, this Yorkshireman is reported to have departed from this world, nose and all, in a state of mind best described as the most abject idiocy."
The question arises: How immense was Wedders' nose, exactly?
A staggering 7.5 inches, equivalent to 19 centimeters precisely—exceeding the height of the iPhone 15, for reference.
This extraordinary nose has been immortalized in a Ripley's Believe It Or Not cartoon and captured in a wax figure, vividly showcasing the remarkable length of his schnoz.
Posthumously, Wedders secured a Guinness World Record for the 'longest nose.'
Although details about Wedders' personal life are scarce, reports suggest he participated as a performer in various circus sideshows until his demise in his early 50s.
Predating the internet era, Wedders captured the attention of Reddit users when an image of his wax figure circulated online.
In response, a stunned Redditor commented, "They say your brain automatically ignores looking at your own nose, but yeah, I don't know about that guy."
Another user inquired, "What is actually happening here? Tumor? Growth? Random genetic mishap? Do the nostrils extend all the way to the tip?? I have so many questions…"
Regrettably, we may not uncover more details about Wedders' nose, but perhaps, someday in the future, his record will be surpassed.
