PUGS REVIEWS - Alien: Romulus

Alien: Romulus was more brutal than my Year 12 ball date making her best friend go with me instead (true story).

You can tell Fede Álvarez had a blast giving the Xenomorphs a crack, especially considering his hot fetish for eviscerating trespassers (see: Don’t Breathe and the 2013 Evil Dead).  Álvarez tastefully expands on the world of the original Alien with impressive set pieces, a dash of gorgeous VFX and a dollop of absolute sicko.

Romulus unfortunately suffers from the same blowout made by most of the later franchise entries: the more I can see those slimy little freaks, the less I’m worried about a surprise entrance from/to my behind.  Though it’s more gory-sci-fi than horror, there’s enough repulsive genital-shaped biology to give H.R. Giger a wide-on.

The last 20 minutes of this sucker made my jaw drop low enough for a second pathetically-moustached mouth to pop out.  It’s the only time of late where I’ve thought a movie was over, found out it wasn’t, and then actually been excited - you know those cold shivers you get when you pee?

Not groundbreaking, still chest-bursting - this is the Alien franchise at its grimiest.

7/10
