‘Ourselves’ is the impressive first single off the upcoming Gramsci album The Hinterlands – due out early 2022.
Never one to do things by halves, Gramsci specialises in creating strikingly powerful sonic journeys, from dark to light and everything in-between – this new track continues the aesthetic this band are renowned for.
An expansive and dynamic post-punk guitar extravaganza, ‘Ourselves’ is a thematically dark and moody track featuring blistering guitars, a driving bass and atmospheric, precision drumming.
The song is “a consideration of the limits and limitlessness of our emotional selves,” explains Gramsci’s chief architect Paul McLaney.
‘All of us have had pause for reflection over the past months. Sometimes that process of self-examination can force us to confront aspects of ourselves that are uncomfortable in order to make any real breakthroughs.”
Acclaimed filmmaker Richard Bell of Christchurch-based production company Shuriken has directed and shot the video. It stars Zachary Te Maari and was filmed on location across Canterbury. Richard is known for his work alongside Anton Corbijn with Joy Division, Depeche Mode, U2, Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana.
