In a galaxy far, far away… wait; this isn’t ‘Star Wars’? Who would have thought that since the big guns of the early years that we would have such a fascination with space and the world around us? We are after all a speckle in the universe, with E.T lurking somewhere within the depths of dark space, therefore ‘Space’ odyssey’s will always be linked towards the Human endeavor.
With a killer soundtrack and a cast to match, Director ‘James Gunn’ brings us what is possibly the best comedy/action mash-up of the year with ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’. Chris Pratt stars as Peter Quill a sharp shootin’ relic hunter that is at best times clumsy and satirical with a brain the size of a Chihuahua, then again bravery is best served with a side of no fear. The story follows a bunch of unlikely friends as they progress to stop the fearless ‘Ronan’ from destroying the Galaxy that engulfs them all. If you think a talking Raccoon, a Tree, a Pro-wrestler and green Zoe Saldana seem like an unlikely bunch to save the galaxy then you sir/madam are kindly mistaken. The film itself takes the audience on a wild ride through trials and tribulations on an adventure ‘Out of this world’…
The CGI within the film is unreal with a mixture of fantastic voice actors. Bradley Cooper could have not done a better job with ‘Rocket’ the Raccoon; his emotion throughout the portrayal of the character is felt with force as he delivers possibly one of the best voice-overs of the last 3 years. Vin Diesels performance as ‘Groot’ most likely could have been summed up with two takes, however you got to hand it to the big guy, it’s nice to see him outside of being his usual fast and furious self. The most surprising performance of the film however goes to Dave ‘Batista’ Bautista, yes the famous wrestler. With wrestling crossovers these days being awfully cringe worthy, Bautista surprisingly delivers something worthwhile and overly hilarious – so ya’ got to hand it to the big guy, he certainly did not disappoint.
Overall the film is a splendid journey through space that the whole family can enjoy with supervision. It is certainly a film not to miss and although it is a slightly smaller scale Marvel adaptation, it blows ‘The Avengers’ out of the water. A Green Zoe Saldana is far more pleasing than an angry Hulk. Stop what you are doing right now and book your tickets to see this film, well worth the entertainment.
I give it a solid 8/10 and a ‘I am Groot’. (Watch it, you’ll understand)
