Within the Political Correct world that we live in nowadays, comedic satire is taken with a shrug and deplore like grin. However, as life goes on you realize that you simply can’t please everyone and that you are best to stick within your own bubble, your circle, your ‘Audience’. This is exactly what Jake Kasdan has done with his latest film ‘Sex Tape’ starring the lustful Cameron Diaz and household funnyman Jason Segel.
Jay (Jason Segel) and Annie (Cameron Diaz) are a married couple still very much in love, but ten years and two kids have watered down the passion. To get it back, they decide to make a video of themselves trying out every position in THE JOY OF SEX in one marathon three-hour session (That’s the whole duration of ‘Lincoln’, yes they did the whole Lincoln.). It seemed like a great idea, until they discover that their most private video has gone public, Via the enigmatic ‘Cloud’. In a panic, they begin a wild night of adventure - tracking down leads and roping in friends, all just to reclaim their video, their reputation, their sanity, and, most importantly, their marriage.
Now, the plot line of this film dabbles a little on the Taboo, where common moviegoers would cringe into their uncomfortable slump of living under a rock since the ‘Nuclear family’ was born. It’s the future people, ‘Sex’ happens; it’s how you were created… so, get over it. The directors of late comedic films have done their dash with the ‘Teen’ romps, and are now focusing on what comes after everything has dwindled down. The filmmakers these days are supplying to their already established audience, while picking up common stragglers along the way. This familiar concept is taking turns into the abstract as we are no longer just placed with, Boy meets girl, they fall in love blah, blah, blah, Ryan Gosling. Instead we are placed with common problems of the modern age along with our acceptance of technology. As technology grows, we as curious beings want to learn and adapt along with it, however our knowledge base at times can certainly be a little rusty, causing heated problems that can create gargantuan conundrums that can be relieved by the simplest of functions, should we know how to use them first, of course.
The film is a flamboyant adventure that has it’s scheduled ‘LOL’ moments bringing the audience to tears of laughter, while even the shyest relate whole heartedly to the occurrences happening on the screen. Although the film has it’s moments of greatness, it still leaves you hanging with a lingering feeling of dissatisfaction, as the film itself could have been tied up a little nicer into a free flowing stream, rather than a raging rapid that seems to hit a wall very early on. However, I digress, and as said the film is aimed at a selective target audience, and not necessarily something for grandma to follow along with.
All in all, ‘Sex Tape’ is a crude, yet tasteful comedy that places the audience in an awkward situation that could happen to just about anyone, willing to partake in such activities. So if you are looking for a fun night out with friends or partners, go see this film… But, maybe leave Mom at home.
I give this film a 5.5/10
