After a long estrangement, Twins Maggie (Wiig) and Milo (Hader) are brought together with an unexpected reunion that forces them both to confront there lives, and how they have managed to dip into the deep end of a heavy depressive state. For Maggie, she must re-evaluate her marriage and self-destructive tendencies, while Milo, must face the pain of a lingering heartbreak that has followed him for quite some time.
This is not the usual premise you would expect for a Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader film, but I assure you that this fresh ideal is well worth watching. Director Craig Johnson (True Adolescents) delivers the audience a truly funny and yet, heartbreaking piece of black comedy that is set to linger with audiences throughout. Thoughts of suicide and self-destruction flood the screen from the start, with a heavy opening. However light comic relief breaks tense scenes into a steady film that progresses almost to swiftly into an unsettling abyss.
The film has some moments of greatness and if you are a fan of Wiig or Hader you will certainly not be entertained as they pull off two performances that really show their ability and style, swaying away from your usual SNL-esque antics. Ty Burrell and Luke Wilson also make a delightful presence on the screen as the chemistry flares in a truly well cast piece of cinema.
If you are looking for a constructive well-pieced piece of film, then I highly recommend checking out ‘The Skeleton Twins’. The Film festival has definitely delivered this year, but don’t fret should you have missed it! The film will be back for cinema release in September.
I give it a solid 7/10
