Foo Fighters have finally released their brand new album, Medicine at Midnight, and the band's Dave Grohl celebrated during the exclusive iHeartRadio Album Release Party with Foo Fighters on the project's release day.
Medicine at Midnight follows 2017's Concrete and Gold, and showcases nine new songs including "Shame Shame," "Waiting on a War" and "No Son of Mine."
During the special, Grohl opened up about the album's origins, sound and more during a special Q&A with iHeartRadio's Booker. Talking about how Medicine at Midnight came to be, Dave talked about making the album, and navigating how to decide when to finally share it in the midst of a pandemic. He explained:
"We started making this record, like in the beginning of 2019, we went in to start recording [in] fall of 2019. And, we had big plans. We were like, 25th anniversary and it's our 10th record, and we're going to go take over the world, and we wrote the songs for these big audiences, basically. I was like, cool, man, let's make songs. We'll make everyone shake their butt and sing along and it'll be huge, great. And then everything shut down. And when everything shut down, the band was kind of the last thing anyone wanted to think about. We just wanted to make sure everyone was safe and we want to make sure that everyone was cool. And after a little while, everyone started getting a little anxious. I'm a spazz anyway. So, for me, to sit around on a couch and do nothing, I was scared. I was scared to sit down. Like I hadn't done that yet. And then it was just a matter of trying to figure out how we were going to eventually release the record and if we're not going to do that thing that we always do, go on tour and do stuff like that, why do we release records? And it's basically because we like to write songs to share with other people. And whether that's in a stadium full of fans, or your kitchen on a Monday night, these songs [are] so that people can sing along."
Grohl also opened up about how his daughter, Violet, ended up singing background vocals on Foo Fighters' new album, and revealed that she actually has an amazing voice. He recalled:
"Violet would come home from school and she just come over to the house where we recorded the record. We didn't do it in a studio, it was at some funky old house. And she'd sit on the couch [and] do her homework and whatever. And our producer, Greg Kurstin, who's a really close friend of ours for years, he was like, 'Hey Violet, do you want to sing a backup vocal?' And she was like, okay. So she went in and Violet has an incredible voice, and she has since she was like little, little. But, now that she's a teenager, I mean, she sings like Etta James, man. Like, she's got the Amy Winehouse thing. She's got the Adele thing. It's amazing."
He continued, "So she goes in and first she does that part in the chorus that when I hear it, it always makes me smile because she did like two takes, and was perfect, and it was awesome. And then, she would come by after school and Greg would say, 'Hey, do you want to do a backup vocal on blah, blah, blah?' She'd be like, okay. So she's all over the record. And I thought like, Oh, how cute, and informal, and sweet and whatever, until my accountant calls and says, 'Hey, I have this check for Violet. Where should I put it?' I was like, 'For what?' And he goes, 'For singing on the record.' I'm like, 'She got paid?' And he's like, 'Yeah, we got to pay. If you're playing on the record, you got to get paid.' And I looked at this check and I was like, that is not going in her bank account right now. That is not that ... she doesn't get that much money right now. That's going in my account and then I'll give it to her when she's 18. I told her, I was like, you should have seen the check you got today."
