Today is a day we thought might never come: Guns N' Roses has released new music!
Days after debuting "Absurd" during its concert at Fenway Park in Boston on Aug. 3 and then performing it again at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey Aug. 5, GNR has released the new single, breaking a 13-year new music drought.
With its blunt force guitar riffs and no-holds-barred profanity, "Absurd" recalls GNR's punk rock upbringing but with the sound and production fidelity of one of the biggest bands in the world. It's the first new recording in 28 years to feature Axl Rose alongside Duff McKagan and Slash.
Introducing the song Tuesday evening in Boston, Rose noted that "Some of you might have heard this under another name." He was likely referring to the song's previous life as "Silkworms," initially written by longtime GNR keyboardist Dizzy Reed.
"Silkworms" was performed a handful of times around the turn of the century, but ultimately left off Chinese Democracy and overhauled by Axl and co. with a new arrangement.
Both Slash and McKagan have said that Rose had accumulated a tremendous amount of new material over the years. Since their reunion, the band has gradually workshopped those songs during sessions in Los Angeles, but until this week there was no indication that a release was imminent.
Slash said in an interview in late-2020 that he was hopeful the band would release new material this year.
