Six strands of Kurt Cobain's hair are headed to auction in a lot of rock memorabilia, including items from Nirvana, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton and Led Zeppelin.
The hair was initially acquired by Kurt's hairdresser and confidant, Tessa Osbourne, on the Bleach tour during a haircut in 1989, well before Nirvana's Nevermind breakthrough two years later, the auction house explains.
Osbourne stashed away a lock and later gifted it to Seattle artist, Nicole DePolo, after Kurt's death in 1994.
Along with the strands of dirty blond hair are photos of the haircut in progress and a handwritten note that reads: "29/10/89: Tess cut Kurt's hair in Birmingham, England, 27 Holy Rd., Handsworth, Birmingham B202BU."
DePolo writes in an affidavit that Osbourne must have "had a sense that Kurt would become a musical force." She further credited the hairdresser with giving the frontman his first "blond pageboy" hairdo "just before his image began to circulate throughout the world."
Bidding today in Iconic Auctions' 'The Amazing Music Auction' begins today, Thursday, May 6, at 8 p.m.
A portion of proceeds from the auction will benefit Live Nation's Crew Nation relief fund, which is helping live music crews who were negatively impacted by the pandemic-related shutdowns.
