Foo Fighters fans were ready for a special night Sunday at Madison Square Garden, as the Dave Grohl-led arena rock outfit reopened Madison Square Garden with a full-capacity concert for a fully-vaccinated audience.
The Foos delivered on every level with a set list packed with hits, deep tracks and surprises, none of which was more significant than comedian Dave Chappelle's appearance onstage with the band to sing a rendition of Radiohead's "Creep" for the audience of 20,000-plus.
The Mark Twain Prize-winning comic was in New York this past weekend, where his new documentary Dave Chappelle: This Time This Place served as the finale of the TriBeCa Film Festival Saturday night. Just as the Foo Fighters were the first act to play The Garden in over 15 months, Chappelle's event was the first at Radio City Music Hall since the pandemic shutdowns in March of 2020.
Wearing a green shirt and sunglasses, Chappelle took the stage at MSG on Sunday to a cascade of cheers following his intro from Dave Grohl. As Grohl leaned on the drum riser, the band ramped into the opening chords of the Radiohead classic and the crowd roared again in recognition of the melody.
The audience sang every word of the song with Chappelle, who put particular emphasis on the second verse lyrics, "I want you to notice when I'm not around / I wish I was special / You're so f---ing special."
