The 25th of September must be marked on Dave Grohl's calendar as today marks some pretty important dates in not only Grohl’s history, but subsequently music history
September 25th 1990 - Dave Grohl joins Nirvana
Dave Grohl joined his first band, Scream, by answering an ad as a guitarist, but soon transitioned to drumming. Kurt Cobain was initially reluctant to see Scream perform, but after witnessing Grohl play, he recognized the talent they needed for Nirvana. Just weeks later, Grohl was invited to Seattle for a rehearsal. During the session, Cobain and Krist Novoselic agreed that Grohl was the right fit, even though he initially thought he was just filling in for another drummer.
The next day, during a radio show, Cobain publicly declared Grohl as "the drummer of [their] dreams," comparing him to renowned drummer Dale Crover. This moment solidified Grohl’s place in Nirvana, setting the stage for their future success.
September 25th 1993 - ‘In Utero’ went to No.1 on the UK album chart, Nirvana’s first
In Utero was both a commercial and critical triumph, lauded for its raw, unconventional sound and Kurt Cobain's poignant lyrics. It topped the US Billboard 200 and the UK Albums Chart, with singles "Heart-Shaped Box" and "All Apologies" also reaching number one on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart. The album is certified five times platinum in the US and has sold 15 million copies globally. Tragically, it was the last Nirvana album released before Cobain's suicide in 1994, just six months after the album's launch.
September 25th 2007 - Foofighters released Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace
Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace featured a blend of electric and acoustic tracks, reflecting the band's evolution and newfound comfort with various musical styles. Dave Grohl noted that the album shows their growth, stating, "we’ve gotten over our insecurities," and presents them in a way they may have previously hidden. He expressed a desire to create an album inspired by The Zombies' Odessey and Oracle, which he listened to extensively during production, and shared his dream of merging the sounds of Steely Dan and Nomeansno. The album was nominated for five Grammy Awards, winning Best Rock Album, and was also awarded the Brit Award of Best International Album.
