The Black Caps have fought to 140 for 2 at the end of the second day of the second cricket test against Australia in Perth.
Kane Williamson notched up his third successive half-century to sit unbeaten on 70, while Ross Taylor is on 26.
New Zealand are chasing Australia's score of 559 for 9 declared.
Martin Guptill was the first of the New Zealand batsmen to go, caught LBW for 1, before Tom Latham was unable to capitalise on a good start, gone for 36.
Earlier in the day the Black Caps put in a much improved bowling performance with spinner Mark Craig finishing with a innings high three wickets.
Trent Boult, Matt Henry and Doug Bracewell picked up two wickets each.
Australia will likely be without batsman Usman Khawaja for the rest of the match after he left the field with a suspected pulled hamstring.
