Trent Boult admits he has concerns he could be felled in the manner of fellow Black Caps tail-ender Mitchell McClenaghan.
Using an older helmet may have played a role in McClenaghan being felled by a short ball in the one day win over Pakistan.
McClenaghan suffered a fractured eye socket after being hit by an Anwar Ali delivery and was forced to leave the field.
Fellow tail-ender Trent Boult said helmet safety has improved recently in the wake of Phillip Hughes' death.
"The visor gap between the grill and the lid is supposed to be smaller. Mitch was wearing an older helmet I believe, that was down to his personal preference."
Boult said as a lower order batsman, those things do creep into your mind.
"Short pitched bowling is something I fear to be honest. But with all the technology and how supposedly indestructable the helmets are, I think we've come a long way."
The Black Caps are travelling to Napier today ahead of the second ODI on Thursday.
