Black Caps captain Brendon McCullum is unsure how much Chris Cairns' ongoing perjury trial will distract him during the tour of Australia.

He's joined the New Zealand squad in Canberra after missing the opening round of the Plunket Shield to give evidence in London.

"It's nice to be around the boys again. I obviously missed that first class game back home so it's good to be able to get back into it and I'm really looking forward to this tour."

McCullum is hopeful the case and its wider ramifications won't cloud his thinking.

"I had a job to do over there and now I'm back here and very much focused on this series. Three tests is a huge opportunity for us and it's a massive challenge and that's where my focus needs to be."

Brendon McCullum will sit out New Zealand's day-nighter against the Prime Minister's XI in Canberra today, but will play against the Cricket Australia XI over the weekend.
