Chiefs lock Michael Allardice has offered an apology for a derogatory comment made at a post-season team bonding session.

Brendan Barraclough complained online of a homophobic slur being levelled against him while also at some hot pools near Tirau yesterday.

Allardice says the comments were directed at a teammate and he was not aware Barraclough was there or that he had mistaken the comments as being directed at him.

Allardice has apologised for the offence caused by his inappropriate comments, regardless of who they were directed at and has taken full responsibility for his actions.

Allardice says he's ashamed of the hurt he's caused Barraclough and the wider LGBT community with his casual use of poor language and has also apologised to the Chiefs.
