Thirty years on from one of New Zealand cricket's most memorable victories, the man who led that bowling attack believes the current side is capable of a repeat.

The Black Caps take on Australia in the first test at the Gabba starting tomorrow, in what many believe is their best chance to be the Aussies since 1985.

Sir Richard Hadlee took 15 wickets in that match and says the current side is an exciting one with a great bowling attack.

"We've got some quality batsmen - a lot of them are averaging 40 - 45 and that really hasn't been seen in the history of our game, to have averages and strike rates up as good as they are at the moment," said Hadlee.

He also believes a potent New Zealand bowling attack and an aggressive captain will help.

"One or two of the Australian new boys coming into the side, and one or two that haven't played a lot of test cricket, they're still trying to prove themselves and McCullum is going to provide a tremendous amount of pressure," Hadlee explained.

Despite this belief, Hadlee thinks Australia has a slightly stronger team.

"I think Australia do have a slight advantage - particularly in their bowling."
