A lack of punch on attack has proved costly for the Kiwis in a 16-nil loss to Australia in the trans-Tasman league test in Newcastle.
It's the first time since 2007 the Kangaroos have held the Kiwis scoreless.
Coach Stephen Kearney is proud of the resilience shown on defence, but said they weren't effective enough on attack which was partly down to Australia.
Kearney said they weren't given the opportunity to fire a shot and then didn't nail the ones that came their way.
He said this isn't a setback but rather an opportunity to build from and learn where they need to imprive.
"You know that's a real foundation for us to build on, and everyone kept reminding us of who they have on their side, and to keep them out they way that we did took a lot of courage and a lot of effort, and I certainly couldn't fault that."
Commentator Phil Gould has criticised the Australian team as aging plodders, who couldn't put away a severely depleted Kiwis outfit.
But Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga said people need to get a better understanding of test rugby league.
"It disappoints me that someone of his ilk would say that," he said.
Meninga said the Kiwis were passionate on defence. He said New Zealand denied with them with great decision making on defence.
Meanwhile two tries each to captain Sarino Fiso and winger Atawhai Tupaea has seen the Kiwi Ferns beat Australia 26-16 in the women's international.
