Lydia Ko has finished runner-up at the PGA Championship in Washington.
Canadian Brooke Henderson has won the title on the first playoff hole.Â
Ko had a short birdie putt on the 17th to move into the outright lead but she had to settle for par, which led to the playoff.Â
World No.4 Henderson, 18, carded a final round six-under 65 to set the clubhouse lead at six-under.
World number one Ko is philosophical about finishing runner-up.
"Even though I'm not the winner, at the end of the day I still feel like there's so many positives to take from this week, and I thought overall I hit the ball pretty solid, especially on the weekend.
"Brooke just out played me, and you can see her confidence is really high, and for her to go right at the pin at the eighteenth in the playoff is amazing."
Henderson said she was able to remain calm during the day.
"I really didn't feel a tonne of pressure, or a tonne of nerves, which I think is the key to shooting six under in the final round, and then being able to play the playoff. Lydia Ko is only one year older than me and we fought the playoff pretty well together."
Viewed as a senior figure on tour despite being only five months older than Henderson, Ko said it was an impressive victory.
"She's been playing really solid all year, a bunch of top tens. For her to win this, for her to win her first major it's amazing, what she's doing at her age."
Brooke Henderson is now the second youngest winner of a major championship, behind Ko.
Aussie Su Oh finished in a tie for eighth at even par after a final round one-under 70, while Minjee Lee was two shots back in a tie for 12th after an even-par closing round.
The next women's major is the US women's Open in just under a month.
