A new generation is pointing to the future of New Zealand cricket in the win over Pakistan in the opening match of the One Day International series.
In his sixth ODI, Henry Nicholls top-scored with 82 in the 70-run victory at the Basin Reserve, helping New Zealand from 100 for six through to 280 for eight from the 50 overs.
New Zealand rolled the tourists for 210, with Trent Boult taking four wickets. Grant Elliott also chipped in with three top order strikes to set the collapse in motion.
Nicholls is thrilled with his effort.
"It's why I play the game," he said. "That's my role in the team."
Paceman Mitchell McClenaghan won't be available for the second ODI in Napier on Thursday as he will undergo minor cosmetic surgery on his eye on Friday after being hit by an Anwar Ali bouncer.
He's also likely to miss the third match at Eden Park on Sunday but may be available for the Chappell-Hadlee series starting next month.
Matt Henry was also hit by a couple of bouncers before making an unbeaten 48 off 30 balls.
"They were targeting him and I know he got tagged a couple of times, and the way he came back was impressive for us," Nicholls said.
