Black Caps batsman Henry Nicholls is looking to take a lesson or two out of newcomer Jeet Raval's book ahead of the second cricket test against Pakistan in Hamilton.

The 28 year old opener scored a half century on debut in Christchurch and Nicholls said Raval's been around a long time domestically, so has a much more controlled approach than many young debutants.

"I was learning a lot from how simple he was keeping it, and it was a mark of someone who's so calm and can keep it so clear."

On a tough batting wicket in the first test, Nicholls made 30 as New Zealand amassed a first innings total of 200.

Nicholls said all he can hope to do is to stay consistent.

"For me my focus has been trying to not focus on myself too much but like I say, just do whatever my role is in the team."

Meanwhile Jeet Raval and Colin de Grandhomme have made impressive entries in the test player rankings following their Black Caps debuts.

Raval has entered the batting rankings in 60th place after knocks of 55 and 36 not out in the first test against Pakistan in Christchurch.

De Grandhomme has entered in 61st position in the bowling rankings after taking seven wickets, including six in the first innings.
