All Blacks halfback Aaron Smith is heading home from South Africa to deal with a personal issue.

Coach Steve Hansen has revealed Smith was seen entering a disabled toilet with a female friend at Christchurch airport after the first Springboks test.

The leadership group met and agreed Smith should be stood down for this week's test against Argentina.

Hansen said Smith has now asked to go home to deal with the fallout.

"Clearly Aaron is bitterly disappointed in his behaviour, and feels he's let the team down, but just as importantly feels he's bitterly disappointed in letting his family and his partner down."

Hansen said Smith has some personal issues to sort out.

"He - at his request - has asked to go home to deal with the personal matters that have come from this incident."

Aaron Smith will face a misconduct hearing when he arrives back in the country.

NZRU Chief Executive Steve Tew said the halfback's made a bad decision which reflects poorly on him and the team.

He said Smith has failed to meet the standards that the union, and the country expect.
